Event Blast: Free Alcohol Use Screening

Free, confidential alcohol screening … and free bagels!

The pressure to drink alcohol in college is a challenge most students will likely face. Whether a student drinks alcohol to fit in socially, to relax or to self-medicate, it is important they know that as drinking increases, so does the likelihood of negative consequences. Not only does excessive drinking increase incidents of risky behavior, it also exacerbates mood disorders like depression. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, more than 150,000 students develop an alcohol-related health problem and between 1.2 and 1.5 percent of students indicate that they attempted suicide within the past year due to drinking.

Naropa University  is offering students alcohol self-assessments  (and are hoping to encourage you with bagels and “virgin” mimosas.)   Students will have an opportunity to take a brief, anonymous and confidential screening and to meet one-on-one with a mental health professional.  The screening provides students with important insight into their drinking behavior and habits and offers helpful treatment and referral information, if necessary.

People with alcohol problems often answer “yes” to one or more of these screening questions:

  *   Have you ever felt that you should cut down on your drinking?

  *   Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?

  *   Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking?

  *   Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?
